What is a Purlin?

A purlin is a horizontal beam or bar that provides structural support for buildings, typically beneath the roof. The rafters of the building or its walls support the purlins. Although they are most frequently employed in metal buildings, these can also replace densely packed rafters in wood-frame constructions. The purlins of a roof sustain the weight of the roof deck, which includes the hardwood panel, plyboard, or sheet metal that forms the roof surface. This is often made of concrete, filled with some sort of weatherproofing, and frequently covered in insulation.

Types of Purlins

Nowadays, two types of purlins- C and Z purlins are commonly produced by purlin manufacturers.

 

  • C purlins- As the name suggests, C purlins are formed like the letters of the C alphabet and are typically used to support walls and floors. This type of purlin is constructed to form the walls and floor joists of a building shell structure, making it ideal for holding the beams needed for flooring. It is generally preferred for cladding since one side of this purlin is plain, but it is ideal for simple span construction as well.
  • Z purlins- Z purlins have a similar shape to the Z alphabet. Most often, cold-formed or rolled sheets are used to create them. They are known to save up to 50% on structural sheets when compared to hot-rolled angles. Z purlins are employed most frequently in agricultural and industrial structures because of their relatively high flexibility and lightweight characteristics, which make them highly adaptable for use in a variety of different sizes.

Purlins provide additional roof support, which form a horizontal diaphragm to support the weight of the roof and deck. They are held up by rafters or walls and run parallel to the building eave. They increase the roof’s rigidity and provide mid-span support, enabling broader buildings to have longer spans.
